Funny how things go in circles.

[ He doesn't preen or puff up too much at Kaworu's compliment, but the little squeeze that followed it is telling enough. He performs a half-squirming, half-wiggling manuever to extricate them from the blankets, but pauses with his feet on the floor and Kaworu in his lap to secure a smaller throw blanket to tuck around Kaworu against the outdoor chill. ]

Izuku-kun? [ Paul calls softly to the other room, levering them all the way to standing once he's confident in his bundling. ] We're going up to the roof. We won't be long.

"It's freezing out there, take something warm," his voice calls from the kitchen. And, warmth in his voice, "Good morning. Happy birthday."

"Don't worry, I have it," Paul answers, brightly, "And thank you. That smells amazing."

It's always a circle. Nature, humans, it's how we all live.

[Kaworu waves a hand lazily, both to add to his profound statement and to acknowledge Izuku's voice in the other room.

Then he wraps himself up in the blanket like a burrito.]

Or how you squirm around at night.

[ Which results in such skill at efficient blanket enfolding. Paul wends his way out of the apartment with his precious bundle, pausing to slip into the loose hall shoes before he opens their front door and steps out.

It's not far from there to the stairs, and then the rooftop access. The crisp air turns his breath to mist right away, gleaming in the pale but blooming predawn light. ]

There. We didn't miss it, see?

...That's it?

[THIS IS NOT ALL THAT MAGICAL. He would deny that he does but... if he DID. He could have squirmed for a few more hours and been very warm and happy.]

It's just a rotation of the planet.

'Just'?

[ That's going to earn someone a tiny, harmless headbutt, skull knocking gently against skull. ]

You haven't even watched it yet and you're already jaded. I don't know what I'm supposed to do with you sometimes.

Give it a while, and I'll let you steal off my plate.

I wanted to be impressed!

[A soft pout! He's done nothing wrong but comment on what's there! Why is it a crime! Why is everyone mean to him!]

I'm still here.

[ Poor, sweet, beleaguered baby angel. Paul cuddles him closer in mollification as he heads towards the roof's edge and sits atop the narrow wall there, settling Kaworu into his lap. ]

That's true. I apologize for my unkindness. How am I going to make it up to you?

[ The dawn continues to creep over the horizon, colours deepening and brightening. ]

[He opens his mouth to make a demand and then... thinks better of it.]

It's your birthday. You're not supposed to make it up to me.

What if I want to?

[ Paul squeezes Kaworu lightly. ]

I try not to completely spoil you all the time. [ Not true. ] Maybe that's my present to me on my birthday. Being indulgent.

You're indulgent when you want to be.

[Usually with Kaworu because his indulgence spreads like an airborne virus. He keeps his arms around Paul's neck and then leans back thoughtfully.]

Do you remember the party I made for you last year?

Do you mean, the best party anyone's ever thrown? The one with the giant sandworm and all of our friends? The one where we sat on the couch with Izuku and made him blush?

[ Paul hums, wrinkling his brow in thought, and shakes his head. ]

No. I'm afraid not. You'll have to remind me.

You kissed me for the first time.

[He rams a little bony fist into Paul's ribs with the utmost affection! Apparently Paul doesn't have to make anything up to Kaworu today but he can get a punch to the tummy. Apparently.]

[ Oof!! Paul catches Kaworu's hand at the wrist far too late to save himself, laughing through the hitch in his breathing. ]

Oh, that's right.

[ But look out, Kaworu: now you have one hand less to prevent Paul from leaning it to cover your mouth with his, smiling into the kiss.

It's a longer kiss than the others this morning. Languid and warm, his tongue teasing the seam of Kaworu's lips until he finds his way past them. When he pulls back, it's not far, and he has new colour in his cheeks. ]

Am I any better at it now?

[At first, Kaworu tries to play hard-to-get, leaning back a little, making Paul work break the barrier of his lips. But once he's through, Kaworu relents completely and melts into the kiss. No barriers between souls for one small moment.]

Yes.

And I'm not standing on a bucket.

I didn't hate the bucket.

[ That's sentimentality for you. Paul kisses Kaworu again, to be sure he did it right, and pink-gold light is only a vague suggestion through his closed eyelids. The dawn is already here. They didn't need to go all this way.

But they did, and so Paul should see it through. He pulls back and nestles Kaworu's head against his chest, leaning back and trusting his centre of gravity to anchor him. ]

You're still a better kisser than I am.
