You have to go toe to toe with someone else. The options are kick the shit out of them or you get the shit kicked out of you.

I was getting to that. I lost in my senior year. Some asshole used an illegal kick on me.

Since I've started teaching my students took home the win on the first tournament they've competed in.

I don’t pity him, that’s for sure. The asshole took a stab at everyone in my building instead of coming at me directly.

Worse yet when that didn’t work he started offering free karate lessons to undermine my business and even started training my son behind my back.

He needs to get a fucking life.

Hatred and trust are not mutually exclusive. The same is true for the opposite values.

The guy has a few points that I wont say are completely awful.
But he's gone out of his way to make my life miserable and I'm not letting him off the hook for that either.

If he had a flat tire and no spare and you saw him on the side of the road, would you stop and help him? Would he do the same for you?

He's loaded and owns a car dealership. That's not a problem he's not prepared for.

...But I'd probably still help. He's done good by someone else I know. I'll give him credit for that. But I wouldn't like it.

That clears up a lot. A code of honor can do a lot to define a relationship with "friend" and "enemy" isn't quite nuanced enough.
