It is one of the traditional patterns of my House suitable to my station.

The precise origin of the skull is lost to us in our modern age. There are apocryphal speculations, but I do not give any credence.

I'm aware that it's symbolic, but being without a lower jaw would of course impede speech and the ability to chew your food. Is there some significance to that, perhaps that you are not allowed to speak freely or perform even acts vital to your own survival without permission?

[The stranger cannot know that their words evoke the faintest hem of thoughtfulness bordering on what, for Ortus, amounts to dry amusement.]

I am a sworn subject of my Lady Harrowhark, and bound to the oaths of my House and my station within it.

There is merit to the question.

Are you worried you're going to get in trouble.

I suppose that one in my place ought to be.

I find that I am not. Put yourself at ease on that account.

Are you a historian, Master Sauveterre?

I'm committed to at least knowing history, so as to know what not to repeat. Why do you ask?

Most who are curious as to the origins of iconography are, in my limited experience, historians.

I am one myself, and I have been informed that I ought to 'branch out' in my network of acquaintances, which I understand to refer to the behavior of trees, and not slime molds.

I might suppose it means other human beings.

Are there branching humans?

[He is genuinely asking.]

I'm not an expert on these matters, you should know.

But when "branching out" is mentioned, it's usually in the way of a family tree, with new connections being formed personally.

Should I understand the advice to 'branch out' to refer, then, to propagating a family?

[Ortus goes to have a little sit down, for a while, and is eternally grateful that the written word does not betray his tone.]

I apologize for any false impression I may have caused you. I do not seek a partner in matrimony or childbearing.

[He has to sit with that for a second, himself.]

That's OK; sadly, I just don't have the hips for childbearing.

Have you seen those genealogy charts, that spread out in all directions with many names connected by boxes and lines? Imagine one of those, but full of people you'd actually choose to spend time with.

[Ortus, whose hips are generous for one in possession of XY chromosomes, of a set with the breadth of his ribs and the width of his shoulders, considers perishing on the spot.]

There are more crucial attributes for parenthood. Or so I understand.

Thank you for explaining the metaphor. We do not have trees on the Ninth. We do have extensive genealogical records.
