Hello, Ochako-san!

I am, as others have noted, 'from space'. Although in fact I left my home planet for the first time when I was 14. But then I mostly lived on a space ship for 4 years, so I think that makes me a pretty good source to verify that space is pretty cool!

Could you tell me more about being a Hero-in-training? What sort of things do Heroes usually do? Service of some kind I assume, but there are many ways to serve. When does training usually start, age wise? How does one get into it?

Sorry... ^^;;;
got excited...

Anyway!! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ
Heroes are pretty much emergency service and law enforcement rolled into one, and also kind of...celebrities as well?
Basically if you've ever read comic books or stories about superheroes, that's literally what we are. Emergency rescue for fires, natural disasters, missing persons or pets, medical relief, and villain capture and detainment from trivial matters like petty theft, classic hit and run, and escalated issues like murder and terrorist-like attacks by really bad/powerful supervillains.
Patrols and community service are more mundane tasks we do, too.
Essentially, the core of what a Hero does is helping people, really.

As for getting in, well...there are Academies that train Heroes all over the globe.
The training starts when a kid is the age to attend high school, and once they complete their studies and graduate, they can take on internships and paid work studies with professionals in the field during their second or third year.
I got lucky and was able to joining those during my first year, though. ^o^
I'm really hoping once I graduate, I can continue working with the Pro Hero I was with, she's very experienced.

[Considering Ryukyu is the current number 10 Hero ranked in Japan? Yeah, she's pretty skilled indeed.]

Just the one galaxy. I have seen a bunch of cool planets! And not only have I seen a nebula or two, I have personally piloted a star fighter through the edges of one.

I asked about Hero stuff because I am a Jedi-in-training. It's not exactly like you describe. For one thing, I suspect the percentage of people back who are capable of 'superpowers' or whatever you want to call it is way, way lower than your world. But Jedi go on missions to help people, in a variety of ways, yes.

Oh? Which one?? I want to know all about it!!
OOOHHH STAR FIGHTER??? Σ(°ロ°)
SO COOL....

[She has just met the coolest person EVER, hot damn.]

Oh, actually, you'd be right about that. It's more rare for people to NOT have quirks than to have one. They're genetic, so they're extremely common.
But not everyone who has a quirk become a Hero. There's...actually a bit of a shortage of trained, licensed, Professional Heroes back home.
But it's really cool to think there are people out there similar to what I'm training to do!!
What sorts of things to Jedi do? Do you have places you go to learn? Or train??

The nebula is called the Archeon nebula. It's not very far, as from my home planet of Lothal. I kinda...set a tiny part of it on fire, with a proton torpedo, to get us all away from the Imperial ships chasing us. But only a tiny bit!

Traditionally, for hundreds and hundreds of years before I was born, Jedi grew up and training in temples. Which might sound weird, but since our abilities are so rare, not many people know how to help people control those abilities. Jedi aren't the only group who how, but there were some of the most widely known.

So the Jedi used to be affiliated with the Galactic Republic, and take missions from the Senate and at the request of sovereign entities within the Republic. Lots of different kinds of missions. Peacekeeping, mediation, medical and relief efforts, aiding law enforcement. And then there was a huge war, and the Senate wanted the Jedi to serve as officers in the war. That was a big mess, and other sorts of missions fell by the wayside. And turns out it was mess on purpose, because the elected leader of the Republic was power hungry jerk, who eventually declared himself Emperor and the Jedi to be traitors.

So during my lifetime training as Jedi is very illegal and dangerous.

Archeon? That one doesn't exist in my solar system...
Or I've just never heard of it...

[...Wait, did he just admit he set a part of his planet on fire with a proton torpedo?? Hmm, um...right, that sure sounds like a major whoospie-doodle. Gonna just. Not touch that.]

Oh, wow...they really do sound a lot like Heroes of the past.
I mean, from old comics and stuff, not what's normal now.
...Actually, now that I think about it, it's a little like the past AND present.

Heroes are kinda like civil servants, since becoming a Professional Hero is a government job and all.
You were even paid directly from the Hero Commission, a faction within the government, depending on your status on the ranking charts, popularity, types of jobs, merchandise sales, stuff like that.
Though, uh...it's kinda the same back in my world, too. The Hero Commission, and Hero Society as a whole, wasn't as perfect and squeaky clean as we were told it was. There were hired guns, working in the shadows, to "keep the peace" by any means possible.
It was pretty...terrible seeing all that come to light during the war still raging back home, actually. I grew up thinking it was so different.

There are still Heroes, and even Hero Trainees like myself and my friends, fighting hard to keep our people and country safe from a major jerk back home, but.
Pretty much, our society and government is in shambles. I'm still kinda worried about what it's like back there now...

[Not his planet, just a part of nebula in the same sector if his planet. These things happen! ]

I'm a little unclear on how the Jedi Order used to be funded. But I definitely got the impression at least some of it came from the Republic Senate.

My master and I did a lot of scavenging, salvage work, and smuggling on behalf of other rebels against the Empire, and refugees with a little money to spare. To try to turn and help out those even less fortunate; it was never easy.

That sounds pretty similar to what Heroes would do, just on a smaller scale.
A lot of purists actually don't like the idea that Heroes, especially Pros, are given pay and a high social status depending on their rank and popularity. They say it undermines what it really means to be a Hero.
While some of the more radical ones were...very, very bad people, and "purified" who they thought were "unworthy" to be Heroes in the worst way possible...

[With blood. Ochako shudders, remembering the Hero Killer, Stain, specifically.]

I actually see now a few of the things they debated were kind of right in a way.
It's kind of why I've had to take a look at what makes a Hero a Hero...and a Villain a Villain. What sort of things happen to start that shift?
Because no one is born being one way or another, you know? Something has to trigger it.
