It's a style of martial arts. Originated in China and Japan, but it was huge where I'm from back in the 80's.

The origin of Karate is actually in the Ryukyu Kingdom, known today as Okinawa when it was annexed by Japan. Humans are always borrowing each other's ideas and changing them slightly to claim them as their own.
